Overview
JHPCN has introduced the “JHPCN Exploratory Research” program for projects selected through independent research programs offered by the centers that constitute the Network-Type Joint Usage/Research Center. The program is intended to encourage promising projects to develop into JHPCN Joint Research Projects in the future.
Exploratory Research Projects are selected from among projects accepted through eligible research programs at each center. Please refer to the links below for details of the programs offered by each center.
Research Programs at Each Center
| Center | Program |
|---|---|
| Information Initiative Center, Hokkaido University | Exploratory Joint Research |
| Cyberscience Center, Tohoku University | Support Program for Young and Female Researchers / Exploratory Research Projects |
| Information Technology Center, The University of Tokyo | Recommendation Program for Young and Female Users |
| Center for Information Infrastructure, Institute of Science Tokyo | TSUBAME Support Program for Young and Female Users |
| Information Technology Center, Nagoya University | Nagoya University HPC Computational Science Collaborative Research Project |
| Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies, Kyoto University | Encouragement Program for Young and Female Researchers |
| D3 Center, The University of Osaka | Exploratory Support Program for Young and Female Researchers |

Nomination and Selection of JHPCN Exploratory Research Projects
From among the projects accepted through the programs listed above, each center nominates projects considered suitable for designation as JHPCN Exploratory Research Projects.
The projects nominated by each center are reviewed by the JHPCN Review Committee, which determines whether they will be selected as Exploratory Research Projects.
Please see this page for past Exploratory Research Projects.
Participation in the JHPCN Symposium
JHPCN holds the Joint Usage/Research Center for Interdisciplinary Large-scale Information Infrastructures Symposium every year.
For projects selected as Exploratory Research Projects, the JHPCN Secretariat will cover travel expenses for one Principal Investigator to attend the symposium in either the year of selection or the following year, in order to provide opportunities to learn about the latest developments in related fields and interact with participants who share similar research interests.
Conditions for Travel Support and Poster Presentations
- Eligible years: Either the year of selection, the following year, or both.
- Travel support for the first symposium attended:
- If the symposium is held while the project is still in progress during the year of selection, travel expenses will be covered.
- If the symposium is held after the project has been completed in the year of selection, travel expenses will be covered only if a poster presentation is given.
- Travel support for the second symposium attended:
- Even when attending in the year following selection, after completion of the project, travel expenses will be covered only if a poster presentation is given.
- Poster presentations: A completed project may give one poster presentation only, except for those who are not eligible as described below.
- Exploratory Research Award: Projects giving poster presentations are automatically considered for the Exploratory Research Award.
Exploratory Research Award
The Exploratory Research Award recognizes particularly outstanding projects and is intended to encourage their further development into JHPCN Joint Research Projects.
Only projects that have completed their research are eligible to give a poster presentation at the symposium and to be considered for the award.
Principal Investigators who have previously had a project accepted as a JHPCN Joint Research Project, as well as Principal Investigators who have previously received the Exploratory Research Award, are not eligible for poster presentations or the award.
Please see this page for past award-winning projects.
Participation in or presentation at the symposium is not mandatory for projects selected as Exploratory Research Projects. Project members are welcome to attend by completing the symposium registration.
